One of my biggest goals and purposes with homeschool is to create readers. Great readers. Verocious readers. Lifelong readers. I think you get the point; reading is very important to me.
This was a big year for us as the twins learned how to read. Below I've listed our favorite curriculums that got us here.
Reading: Bob Books
Need I say more? Bob Books have an awesome reputation for helping kids get started down the reading path and there's many reasons why. The simplicity of the pictures and words are great and there is nothing like the smile on the boys' face when they finish these little books and can say "I just read the whole thing!"
Spelling: All About Spelling Level 1
This is a WONDERFUL curriculum! They had multi-sensory in mind when they created it, which you know I love because it screams autism-friendly. :) Really it's great for any kid, but especially our fidgety friends.
In addition to the hands-on approach, this curriculum offers easy to teach lessons with built in review. That way, you are sure your child knows and remembers what he's learned.
Phonics: Evan Moor Phonics Centers K-1
This is a great compliment to the All About Spelling curriculum. We did one "pocket" a week (there are twelve). The boys love the fun puzzles and the worksheets that go with each lesson are good for reinforcing concepts. It's a good overview supplement but I wouldn't recommend it as a stand alone.

I always love to hear about what works for someone else. My nephew went to a kindergarten program this year, and we realized that he wasn’t learning there. This summer and next year we are going to be doing a lot of home schooling and un-schooling. This is the first I have heard about Bob Books and I follow a lot of Home schoolers. I will be checking them out! I think the sensory learning tools work best for him, as well.
ReplyDeleteCongrats and good luck in your homeschool endeavors! Bob books are great - hope you enjoy them. Most of the curriculum I talk about involves sensory learning; we are big on that, as well :).
DeleteWe're homeschooling, as well. It is such a fun thing!
ReplyDeleteI don't know who enjoys it more...me or the kids ;).
DeleteI'm going to look into Bob Books. I have a Kindergartener and he is getting pretty good at reading.
ReplyDeleteYou will love them - and so will he, which is what's really important :)
DeleteI can't say enough good about Bob Books. I love, love, love them. My kids are in their early 20's and I still have my set. It's one of those things I just can't let go of because the value was powerful.
ReplyDeleteI can see myself hanging onto them as well! We're almost done with the whole collection and I'm wishing there were more sets!
DeleteThanks so much for sharing! My son is at the age where he's almost ready to start preschool, and I'm planning ahead to whether I want to homeschool or look into other options.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! My 4 year old is in preschool right now, but I also want to continue learning at home. I admire homeschooling moms! I don't have the ability to homeschool, but when doing lessons and learning at home, how do you get them to stop playing and say here.. this is learning time, lets sit here and do this, instead of running all over the place like mine does? lol
ReplyDeleteWonderful! My youngest is finishing pre-school and heading the K next year. I'm not sure I'd ever have the patience to teach at home.
