One morning last week, one of the boys declared it "game day" and over an hour of OT followed. A big perk of homeschool is that, well, we're home. So instead of getting ready first thing in the morning, they played games.
I am not talking about video games or even board games. I mean the classics. I'm talking about imagination and running and playing with purpose. I'm talking about "recess games" that should be passed down to the next generation. The best part is that you can play them inside or outside; either way, it gets the kids moving.
Here's our list of favorites:
Duck, duck, goose
Red light - green light
Tag
Freeze tag
Simon says
Pillowcase races (a.k.a. potato sack races)
Giant steps
Hide-n-seek
Animal motions - I'd say "hop like a frog" or "slither like a snake."
Obstacle course...and yes, the couch cushions were involved!
Did I miss any? What are some of your childhood favorites?
Great list! I miss freeze tag and duck duck goose! lol.
ReplyDeleteWe used to play Kick the Can and Red Rover too. These all bring back happy memories!
ReplyDeletewe did, too, until it wasn't allowed at school anymore because a kid flipped over the red rover arm link :(
DeleteI used to love skipping ropes as a child. I'm pretty sure I'd be useless at it now though, lol.
ReplyDeleteOh man, I miss some of those games. One of my favorites from grade school was Red Rover.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful games! I think my son is familiar with most if not all of these. I love Red Rover when I was in grade school many moons ago. :)
ReplyDeleteMy kid beats me at Simon Says every single time. It's his favorite! Love this idea!!
ReplyDeleteGreat flash from the past! Red Light Green Light. Had totally forgotten that one. My girls tell me Freeze Tag is totally different now. We had to go between someone's legs to unfreeze them. Now they aren't allowed to have that rule. Another game we used to play wasn't so much a game but it was still fun: monkey rolls.
ReplyDeleteRed light green light was one of my favorite games. What a fun blast from the past.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas because sometimes you forget the simplest things!~
ReplyDeleteThose were the best games ever. I always remember playing hide-seek, Red light - green light and jumping rope as a child. Those simple games were so much fun, This brings back memories.
ReplyDeleteWe loved dodge ball, but that is not allowed anymore
ReplyDeleteI know...it's just not fair!
DeleteMy kids love doing these games too!
ReplyDeleteI liked Steal the Bacon, where you'd have a number and run into the middle and try to pick up the eraser/ball/whatever before the other person with the same number. No, wait a minute, I hated that game! lol
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of that one!!
DeleteLove these games! We used to do some of these but have been stuck in a LEGO rut lately. I am pulling out the old school ideas again soon!
