In order to make changes in your health, it's got to be simple. Easy, perhaps not, but simple is a must.
Here are five simple ingredients you can start slipping into your food to promote a more nutritious new year!
Cinnamon: flavorful yet discreet enough that it doesn't overpower
Use in:
pancake mix
waffle mix
just about anything you bake - cookies, muffins, cakes - add with dry ingredients of recipe
hot tea, chai, apple cider
applesauce
Raw Garlic: you can never over garlic...okay, so Olive Garden toes the line, but it's really good for you!
Use in:
pasta
salad dressing (like this Red Wine Vinegar Dressing)
cooked veggies
Turmeric: this yellow powder is packed with goodies
Use in:
eggs
potato or macaroni salad
chili
Chia seeds: great by themselves and can even be used as an egg replacer. Because of that reason, when baking with chia seeds you may need to add a few tablespoons more liquid to your recipe.
Use in:
pancake mix
waffle mix
smoothies (check a mirror when you add them to your smoothie...they do get stuck in your teeth!)
Coconut oil: I am borderline obsessed with this versatile oil ;)
Use in:
um, EVERYTHING :).
Replace all of your oils (except olive) and even butter in both pan cooking and baking
in place of butter on toast.
What are your favorite "sneaky" ingredients?
I'm always looking for ways to add healthy ingredients to our dishes. The kids just don't want to let loose of the comfort foods. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteThese are all GREAT ideas! I do use most of them on a regular basis but I never thought of turmeric in eggs! and we eat a LOT of eggs, lol! I like to add veggies (like squash, mushrooms, broccoli) to my pasta sauce. If you chop them up small enough, the kids never even notice!
ReplyDeleteI have got to do that with the veggies - we could always use more!
DeleteI really need to start using coconut oil, and I've never used or eaten chia seeds. I've been hearing great things about both.
ReplyDeleteI use garlic in everything. Well, almost everything. I've been hearing a lot about Chia seeds, but admit that I really didn't know what benefits they provided.
ReplyDeleteA friend just told me that coconut oil also works great to help heal chapped cheeks from dry winter air. I'll have to try cooking with it now, too.
ReplyDeleteabsolutely - we use it for chapped lips, as well. I've got a jar in the kitchen and one in the bathroom.
DeleteI so wish I liked the taste of coconut. It prevents me from using that oil because I always taste it in whatever I make with it. But I'm going to try adding those chia seeds to my pancakes!
ReplyDeleteLiz, you've gotta try the refined oil - no flavor! the unrefined does make chicken taste slightly like a pina colada, though... ;)
DeleteI recently discovered Chia Seeds and love using them in my morning smoothies.
ReplyDeleteI'm HUGE on chia seeds but also flaxseed and spinach. I put spinach is just about everything!
ReplyDeleteI would have never thought to slip those ingredients into those different foods! What a great resource
ReplyDeleteI try to add healthier ingredients in our foods, but haven't tried some of these. Thanks for the suggestions!
ReplyDeleteWe put garlic in a LOT of recipes. Even our kids love it. Never cooked with turmeric before though! I'll have to look into that one.
ReplyDeleteI slip most of these in dishes whenever I get the chance.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great resource. I'm printing this out and keeping it in my kitchen! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with coconut oil, too!
ReplyDeleteI have never used Tumeric before. I love raw garlic and cinnamon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great ideas. I have been trying to sneak in veggies and now going to try some of these.
