Whatcha Teachin'?: Kindergarten & 1st Grade Music

**this post contains affiliate links
We are a music lovin' family.

Music with little kids is all about exposure.  Our boys have been exposed to everything (clean) from Laurie Berkner to Billie Holiday to Dean Martin to Beethoven to Van Morrison to John Mayer...and beyond.

We've always had kid instruments available for them to play with and we even got a full sized Casio keyboard for Christmas last year.  The boys still fall asleep to music and we love to sing along with the radio. But how do you teach music to little ones?
I felt like my guys were too young for any type of composer unit studies and I wanted our focus to be on the actual music at this point.

I won't go into all the benefits of music, especially with kids on the spectrum and especially classical music (I'll save that for another post) but I will say music is beneficial for all kids.  It's a must have - in some capacity - as a part of your homeschool curriculum.

Tuesdays:
Time on the keyboard.  We got a Casio  from my parents last Christmas that has keys that light up as you hit the note.  There are tons of songs on there to learn and even a music challenge where the boys' practice note accuracy.  I have yet to put them in real lessons, but at least once a week they get time to experience the keyboard and learn songs.
Thursdays:
I put together a curriculum based on Baby Einstein's "Meet the Orchestra." It may seem too young for Kindergarten and 1st grade, but it's really not; it's a wonderful introduction to the orchestra and individual instruments.  I've incorporated library books as well.  We already owned both the CD and DVD so a free music unit study sounded...great to me.  (I'll fight the urge to use the cliche "like music to my ears...")

There is no link to my curriculum, however, if you email me at rinnace at gmail dot com or leave a comment requesting, I would be happy to send it to you.  Yes, for free. :)  Homeschool isn't cheap - I get that!
