It's His Birthday...He Can Cancel if He Wants To

One of the twins decided he was not having a birthday this year.  I'm not talking about a birthday party; but, the actual birthday.

He decided not to turn seven.

When I inquired about his reasoning, he told me simply, "When you grow up, you get old...and die."

He's at the age where he's discovered this happened.  My father's passing last April surely helped open his eyes to this.

No amount of coaxing would change his mind; not even the reminder of our annual Toys R Us trip.  He simply asked if he could go to his Nona's with his younger brother while we took the other twin.  I'm not going to lie, that part was hard on me.  I know they're individuals, but his other half was still missing.

It's hard to explain to kids that time is inevitable.  Even though he continues to tell people he's six, we all know the truth; he turned seven last Saturday, whether he wanted to or not.

So, what did we do about the big day?

We convinced him to have a Valentine's Day party...on the same day his twin was having a birthday party.

Our decorations included Star Wars birthday cups and Valentine's Day banners.  Black balloons and red heart plates.  We combined the days and had an excuse to make cupcakes, eat ice cream, and open presents.

It turned out to be a great day.

Just another example of how our lives may not always look "normal" but with a little creativity, we can make it work.

In sharing this with some friends and family, I quickly learned my son is not the only kid to ever cancel his own birthday.

Has your child ever cancelled a birthday?

  3. My oldest daughter wanted to cancel her 30th birthday, but realized it didn't matter she's still a year older. It's hard when our children are so traumatized by an event that they don't feel continuing their own is worthwhile. It was a good decision to make it just a V-Day event and go on with life.

  5. Kids are adorable. My son asked yesterday if he will still be allowed to go to grandmas when he's four. It is so adorable that they think so much will change on their birthday.

  9. Glad he had fun. And just tell him that the older you get, the more (and better!) presents you get!

  10. Awwww, it's so hard for the little ones to understand, and we want to keep them innocent for as long as we can. Glad he had a good day :)

  11. I would like to cancel mine. Although it's better than the alternative. :) He sounds like a special kid. My son would NOT cancel his and miss out on gifts. LOL!
